Naxos Island

Naxos Greece

The largest island in Cyclades and one of the most beautiful in Greece

Naxos is the largest island in Cyclades and one of the most beautiful in Greece. It combines superior beaches with mountainous beauty and long history for numerous of places to be explored. Naxos Town is the capital of the island and it is a beautiful cosmopolitan town. Hotel Astir of Naxos is located in Naxos Town and 150 metres from the sandy beach of Saint George.

Naxos Island - Naxos Town The Old Town of Naxos Town has tiny roads, alleys, archways and old houses, in and around the old Venetian Castle. North of the port, a pathway stretches out to the islet of Palatia and the unfinished Temple of Apollo (6th century BC). Portara (top picture), is the huge entrance (6 metres height, 3.5 metres width) to the temple that Naxos tyrant Lygdamis began building on Palatia Islet. Further north of Palatia (in Grotta) are remains from the Mycenaean period.

Naxos - has some of the very best beaches in Greece. There are over 40 Kilometers of beaches to choose from, and most of them are sandy. There are popular and busy beaches with facilities as well as quiet and remote beaches.

The south west of Naxos is almost one beach (Saint George, Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Plaka, Orkos, Mikri Vigla, Kastraki, Pyrgaki), interrupted by a few peninsulas. North east and north west beaches are beautiful too, while the new road south to Moutsouna leads to Psili Ammos an almost undiscovered beach.

Apeirathos or (T'Aperathou) is a pretty village on the slops of Mount Zas at 650 metres altitude and was supposed to have originally been settled by Cretans. The village has its own distinct style, the houses are built from marble.

Sagri (11 Km from Naxos Town) with its ancient monuments, Byzantine Churches, Venetian castles is one of the interesting places in Naxos Island. The plethora of old Byzantine churches and Monasteries in the area are reminiscent of the famous Byzantine area of Mystra. The village itself with the beautiful island houses, quaint cobblestone alleys's old churches and monasteries, amazing windmills and above all its hospitable inhabitants, gathers the interests the visitors to the area.
